our garden, early in the season

our garden, early in the season

Our farm is located on several acres in Becket, a small hill-town in the middle of Berkshire County Massachusetts.  Though we very much love our town and the members of our community, Becket offers a challenging environment to farm.  Referred to by locals as the “ice-box of Berkshire Country”, Becket has rocky soil, a high water table (at least on our property), and is often several degrees colder than the surrounding areas.  Thus, in all of our pursuits we have had to be thoughtful about what we have chosen to raise and grow.

When we began to consider raising poultry, ducks were the obvious fit.  They love wet and cool areas and have no issues with the cold.  They will happily waddle about in the rain or snow.  Ducks also make great use of pasture, as they love to eat grass, young dandelion greens, and nearly any insect they can root from the soil.  As we are always in the pursuit of creating more green pasture spaces, we hope that this will allow us to raise even more ducks in this sustainable, healthy, and cost effective way.

Though not nearly ready for commercial production, we have also launched into many other agricultural endeavors such as mushrooms, tree fruits and berries, and vegetables.  Again, we have had to choose carefully to match each enterprise to our environment.  We hope that some of the products will be available for purchase in the next several years, and encourage you to check this site and our Facebook account to keep up on what we’re up to.
